Ethiopian Airlines has finalized a purchase agreement with De Havilland Canada for two Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft, marking a significant move to strengthen its regional and domestic aviation capabilities. Known for their short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, the 300-G model is well-suited for operation in remote and infrastructure-limited regions—key areas in Ethiopia’s diverse landscape.
These new aircraft will support a broad range of functions beyond passenger transport, including tourism, emergency medical services, airport calibration, and private charters. This aligns with Ethiopian’s goal to broaden its domestic services and diversify its operational offerings.
With a current network of 22 domestic destinations, Ethiopian is investing in aviation infrastructure across the country to further enhance local connectivity. This aircraft acquisition reflects the airline’s long-term strategy to improve regional accessibility and reinforce its role as a key player in African aviation.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, stating, “We are excited to reintroduce the upgraded De Havilland Twin Otter DHC-6-300G into our fleet. These highly reliable aircraft are perfect for various roles and can operate from airstrips that cannot accommodate larger planes.” As Africa’s largest carrier by fleet size, Ethiopian continues to focus on expanding its domestic operations alongside its international growth. The addition of the Twin Otter Classic 300-G enhances Ethiopian’s capacity to connect remote communities within Ethiopia and the wider East African region.
