Ethiopian Airlines Set to Launch Africa’s First eVTOL Air Taxi Service in 2026

Date:

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – July 20, 2025 – Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most profitable airline, is poised to make aviation history on the continent by becoming the first African carrier to integrate electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft into its operations. CEO Mesfin Tasew has confirmed that the airline expects to receive the first two of four Archer Aviation Midnight eVTOLs in 2026, marking a significant stride towards sustainable and advanced air mobility in the region.

This groundbreaking initiative, valued at approximately $30 million, positions Ethiopian Airlines at the forefront of the global movement towards greener aviation. The Archer Midnight aircraft, designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, are engineered for short-range, rapid back-to-back trips with minimal charging time.

Revolutionizing Connectivity and Tourism in Ethiopia

Initially, these electric air taxis will primarily serve the burgeoning tourism sector in Ethiopia, offering swift and efficient transport to popular government-run resort areas. This includes connecting travelers to renowned destinations like Lalibela and the Simien Mountains, where traditional road infrastructure can be challenging. What might typically be a 60-90 minute car journey could be reduced to a mere 10-20 minute flight, significantly enhancing the travel experience for tourists and unlocking new possibilities for remote access.

“This partnership marks a new chapter for African aviation,” stated Mesfin Tasew. “We see significant potential in integrating eVTOLs into our network, especially to boost tourism and improve last-mile connectivity.”

Beyond tourism, Ethiopian Airlines envisions a broader urban air mobility (UAM) network across East Africa, with these eVTOLs playing a crucial role in alleviating urban congestion and offering a new dimension of regional connectivity.

A Collaborative Approach to a Sustainable Future

The agreement with US-based Archer Aviation extends beyond the delivery of aircraft. Archer will provide comprehensive operational support, including a dedicated team of pilots, technicians, and engineers to assist with the initial deployment. Furthermore, Archer will supply backend software infrastructure and front-end booking applications, laying the groundwork for a seamless electric air taxi service. Both companies are also working closely with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) to establish the necessary regulatory framework for safe and efficient eVTOL operations.

Benefits of Embracing eVTOL Technology:

  • Environmental Sustainability: As electric aircraft, the Midnight eVTOLs produce zero direct carbon emissions, aligning with global efforts to decarbonize the aviation industry and contributing to cleaner air.
  • Reduced Noise Pollution: Electric motors are significantly quieter than conventional aircraft engines, making eVTOLs ideal for urban environments and sensitive ecological areas.
  • Operational Efficiency: The ability to take off and land vertically eliminates the need for extensive runway infrastructure, offering greater flexibility and opening up new routes.
  • Faster Travel Times: For short to medium distances, eVTOLs can dramatically cut travel times, providing a premium, time-saving transportation option.
  • Lower Operating Costs (Long Term): While initial investment is substantial, electric propulsion generally leads to lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to traditional aircraft over their operational lifespan.

Pioneering a New Era for African Aviation

Ethiopian Airlines’ decision to invest in eVTOL technology underscores its commitment to innovation and its long-standing reputation as a leader in African aviation. While the commercialization of eVTOLs still faces regulatory and infrastructural hurdles globally, this move by Ethiopian Airlines demonstrates a proactive approach to embracing future air mobility solutions. The airline’s vision includes not only establishing an air taxi network but also exploring the wider potential of eVTOLs for eco-tourism and other specialized applications.

As the world looks towards more sustainable and efficient transportation, Ethiopian Airlines is setting a powerful precedent for the African continent, proving that cutting-edge aviation is within reach and can play a vital role in economic growth and environmental stewardship. The skies above Ethiopia are set to become a testbed for the future of flight, with 2026 marking the exciting beginning of this electric revolution.
