The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its Value of Air Transport report for Kenya, highlighting the vital role aviation plays in the country’s economy through job creation and economic activity.

According to 2023 figures, aviation and related tourism contribute:
- USD 3.3 billion to Kenya’s economy—equivalent to 3.1% of GDP
- 460,000 jobs supported across the sector and its wider impact, including 5,700 directly employed by airlines
- 380,000 tonnes of air cargo handled, ranking Kenya as the 35th largest air cargo market globally
Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, noted that Kenya’s aviation industry is a powerful economic engine. With Africa’s air transport sector expected to grow by 3.7% annually over the next two decades, Kenya has significant opportunities to expand these benefits. Achieving this will depend on modern, cost-efficient infrastructure, a highly trained workforce, and progress toward net zero emissions by 2050.
IATA’s Recommendations for Kenya:
- Infrastructure Development: As Kenya builds and upgrades airports, IATA urges ongoing collaboration with airlines and adherence to international standards to enhance efficiency and support Nairobi’s role as a regional trade and tourism hub.
- Passenger and Cargo Facilitation: Kenya’s new electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system could improve accessibility for tourists and business travelers. Strengthening digital systems for cargo and passenger services will boost Kenya’s competitiveness as a transport hub.
- Training and Workforce Development: To fully unlock aviation’s economic potential, Kenya must invest in skills training—particularly in aircraft maintenance, ground handling, digital systems, and sustainability. IATA’s regional training center, operated in partnership with Kenya Airways, will play a key role in preparing the next generation of aviation professionals.
