Kenyan carrier Safarilink Airlines has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with French aircraft manufacturer AURA AERO for the purchase of six ERA hybrid-electric aircraft—four firm orders and two options. This move reflects Safarilink’s commitment to sustainable aviation and aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the industry.

The ERA aircraft, designed for regional routes, features a hybrid-electric propulsion system, combining eight electric motors and two sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)-compatible turbo-generators. With a range of up to 900 nautical miles (1,666 km) and the ability to take off from short, unpaved runways, the 19-seat aircraft is particularly well-suited to Africa’s rugged and remote terrain. It can also carry up to 1.9 tonnes of cargo, making it a flexible solution for both passenger and cargo operations.
Safarilink, established in 2004, is Kenya’s leading safari airline, providing scheduled and charter flights to premier tourist destinations across Kenya and into northern Tanzania. The airline currently operates a fleet of 12 aircraft, including Cessna and DeHavilland models with capacities between 13 and 52 seats.
Safarilink CEO Alex Avedi emphasized that adopting the ERA aircraft aligns with the airline’s strategy to modernize its fleet with environmentally friendly and efficient aircraft. He highlighted ERA’s benefits in lowering fuel use, reducing emissions by up to 80%, and cutting down on maintenance costs.
AURA AERO’s president and co-founder Jérémy Caussade expressed enthusiasm over the partnership, noting that Safarilink’s adoption of the ERA platform demonstrates a proactive shift toward low-carbon aviation in regional markets.
The ERA is packed with cutting-edge aerodynamic and avionics technologies, and its pressurized 1.88-meter-high cabin ensures an elevated level of comfort for passengers. The aircraft can also be customized for business or special missions, further enhancing its appeal to a variety of regional operators.
With Safarilink’s new commitment, AURA AERO’s order book now exceeds 650 ERA aircraft, valued at over $10.5 billion, signaling strong industry confidence in the future of hybrid-electric regional aviation.
